چکیده

Among technological options to mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, Carbon Capture and Storage technology (CCS) seems particularly promising. This technology allows to keep on extracting polluting fossil fuels without drastically increasing CO2 atmospheric concentration. We examine here a two-sector model with two primary energy resources, a polluting exhaustible resource and an expensive carbon-free renewable resource, in which an environmental regulation is imposed through a cap on the atmospheric carbon stock. We assume that only the emissions from one sector can be captured. Previous literature, based on one-sector models in which all emissions are capturable, nds that CCS technology should not be used before the threshold has been reached. We nd that, when technical constraints make it impossible to capture emissions from both sectors, this result does not always hold. CCS technology should be used before the ceiling is reached if non capturable emissions are large enough. In that case, we nd that energy prices paths must di er between sectors re ecting the di erence of social cost of the resource according to its use. Numerical exercise shows that, when the ceiling is set at 450ppm CO2, the initial carbon tax should equal 52$/tCO2 and that using CCS before the ceiling is optimal.

The Grey Paradox: How Fossil-fuels Owners Can Bene t From Carbon Taxation.∗

This paper studies the distributional impacts of optimal carbon taxation on fossilfuels owners. We show that optimal carbon taxation can increase the pro ts of owners of a carbon-emitting exhaustible resource. Such phenomenon contrasts with claims from fossil-fuels owners especially from OPEC member countries that carbon taxation will undermine their pro ts. We build a theoretical model of reso...

Sensitivity analysis of parameters affecting carbon footprint of fossil fuel power plants based on life cycle assessment scenarios

In this study a pseudo comprehensive carbon footprint model for fossil fuel power plants is presented. Parameters which their effects are considered in this study include: plant type, fuel type, fuel transmission type, internal consumption of the plant, degradation, site ambient condition, transmission and distribution losses. Investigating internal consumption, degradation and site ambient con...

Environmental Impact of Fossil Fuel Utilization in Neka Thermal Power Plant

Carbon dioxide causes green house effect and has been considered as a pollutant source forsafe environment. Since combustion of fossil fuel may create tremendous amount of carbon dioxide, detecting any pollutant sources would be important to eliminate the origin of pollution sources.Evaluation of smoke dispersion generated by the power plant utilizing fossil fuel is the objective of thispaper. The Fossil Episode∗

We build a two-sector dynamic general equilibrium model with one-sided substitutability between fossil carbon and biocarbon. One shock only, the discovery of the technology to use fossil fuels, leads to a transition from an inital pre-industrial phase to three following phases: a pure fossil carbon phase, a mixed fossil and biocarbon phase and an absorbing biocarbon phase. The increased competi...
